Do Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure Really Work?

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network Also check out Alternatively-Healthier.com for more on natural remedies.

By Paul Johnson

Even though high blood pressure remedies are on the market a lot today, there are many natural remedies that can help you lower your blood pressure. One of the first things you need to do is to go get a physical and figure out why your blood pressure is high. If something relatively simple is causing it, such as diet, then you should be able to lower and maintain it at a healthy level quite easily.

Number one on the list to keep blood pressure levels at optimum is to get plenty of exercise. Exercise is important because it helps the blood circulate within your body. When you exercise, your heart pumps harder, which pushes more blood through your veins. In turn, this improves circulation and reduces blood pressure levels after exercise is complete. If you have high blood pressure, a daily exercise routine is likely to help. Of course, you should check with your doctor first to make sure you don't have any underlying health problems that would prevent this. In addition, you shouldn't make your exercise regimen too strenuous if you haven't been active for a while. You can hurt yourself.

Another way to help control blood pressure naturally is to eat right. Eating a healthy diet that limits high fat foods, salt, and alcohol consumption will also help lower your blood pressure. If you currently eat large amounts of these things, this could be a major reason for your high blood pressure.

There are some supplements that can also help you lower your blood pressure. These include fish oil, hawthorn, garlic, and coenzyme Q 10. Coenzyme Q 10 has been shown to be effective in reducing systolic blood pressure levels. In addition, if you have type 2 diabetes along with high blood pressure, you may also benefit from taking coenzyme Q 10.

Garlic is another way to beneficially lower systolic blood pressure. However, you have to reduce or cease taking garlic or garlic supplements altogether if you are about to undergo surgery. In addition, you should not consume garlic for a period of time after surgery is complete. In other cases, though, garlic can greatly help with blood pressure levels. That said, though, it can also interact negatively with certain medications and should be checked with your doctor. You may need to avoid it when you take medications such as Trental or Coumadin.

if you are looking for an herbal supplement to help maintain healthy levels for your blood pressure then you should consider taking hawthorn. Diastolic blood pressure levels can be greatly reduced when taking hawthorn. There are no herbal drug interactions with hawthorn.

Another beneficial supplement is fish oil. DHA is an important supplement for brain health, and fish oil is a major source. You can also eat a lot of fish, but the capsules are good substitute if you don't like fish. Again, fish oil is contraindicated in certain cases, so check with your doctor before you take it.

In addition to medication, there are natural, healthy ways to reduce your blood pressure. These include changing your diet to include more potassium and less salt, exercising regularly, and taking supplements such as those mentioned in these articles as recommended by health care professionals. Exercise especially is beneficial because it helps improve circulation, and of course it should be done under the guidance of your physician. It may mean that you won't have to take medications "forever," but may simply need to take them for a short period of time as recommended by your doctor until your blood pressures under control; perhaps you can even avoid taking them altogether. Cholesterol, too, is of great impact when it comes to blood pressure. If your cholesterol is high, it may be beneficial to avoid taking cholesterol-lowering medications and focus on diet and exercise, as well as other lifestyle changes, instead. Again, this is something that should be done under the supervision of your doctor.

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network
Finally someone other than me writing posts about martial arts. Thank you, thank you!  ka

By Hugh Roberts

There are many different reasons that people get involved in martial arts. One of the reason is for the fitness aspect of Martial arts. Enhanced endurance, strength, dexterity and flexibility are a a small amount that Martial arts helps to develop. Martial arts also helps diminish stress levels. Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Ju Jitsu and Capoira are a only some types of martial arts that offer you great overall fitness benefits.

Another reason that several people are fascinated in Martial Arts is for self defense. Women's self defense or law enforcement has specialized particular classes that deal rigorously with martial arts as self defense. A lot of martial arts schools also offer self defense as an element of their programs.

When choosing a martial arts facility, you need to figure out what type of method of martial arts you want to focus on. Some of the styles are stand up, weapons based, low impact and combating. The stand up style concentrates on kicking, punching and blocking. During one of these classes you would study foot work and stance positions. A weapons based class would focus more on the use of certain types of weapons. Low impact martial arts can also be called Meditative. This style deals more with breathing techniques, energy, stress relief and work outs.

A several tips to finding a martial arts school that is just right for you would be to first find one that teaches the kind of martial arts you are interested in. You can come across in the phone book or ask friends. Then you want to go check out a class. Watching a class will allow you enormous insight into the tone and what is expected.

The next thing you should to do is contact the schools that you are fascinated in and schedule a free or reduced rate session. Many schools will be more than glad to do this for you.

After you take your introductory class from several schools, you should know which one that you are fascinated with. Before you signing up for any class, make sure and inquire if there are any fees that must be paid, such as membership fees or organizational fees. You also need to ask about the clothing code. Will you be obligated to purchase a uniform, particular shoes or gloves. All of this adds to the price of the class.

Why Practicing Yoga Is Great For Your Health and Stress Levels

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Christina Ingham

The Sanskrit word Yoga means Union, an entryway to balancing the spiritual, mental and physical aspects of the being. It has the distinction of being the oldest personal development technique known. Practiced for almost 5000 years, the body is gradually conditioned by emphasizing the strengthening of the mind and body, at the same time stimulating the soul - it is both a science and a philosophy.

Yogi and Yogini refer to male and female practitioners of yoga respectively. In practice this is an applied science of the body and mind and it is part of the six orthodox systems that make up Indian Philosophy. It is a vast subject and contains a great deal more than just sitting around in a lotus position just chanting along in unison.

Back problems and others arising from bad posture can be cured by yoga and it also reduces stress. The main reason this complementary therapy is used with cancer patients is the feeling of wellness it bestows. Many feel that the best time to perform the discipline is on an empty stomach, before any food is consumed in the morning.

This ancient holistic system has many styles to it and some are given below: Raja Yoga: This literally means kingly yoga and is one of the four main paths of yoga. The practice of this yoga is meditation and methods that help in controlling the body, mind, energy and the senses.

The Kundalini Yoga is a non stressful and safe practice which gives instant results. It is based on a set of special exercises or Kriyas. We also have Hatha Yoga which is an extremely wonderful system that is comprised of breath control and postures; it is the basis for all of the modern asana based discipline forms.

Sahaja Yoga - This is a unique meditation based method for self realization, Kundalini awakening. This experience is personal, arising within each and every person. Moksha hot yoga: This is therapeutic yoga that is a practiced in a special place with a temperature that is above the atmospheric temperature based on the traditional principles of yoga.

Yoga is getting famous nowadays and is being practiced by both the young as well as the old people as it is good for people of all ages. Its growth and popularity as a form of exercise is due to the fact that here nothing is done to you, it is something you do to yourself. This is beneficial for pregnant women as it helps to make them more patient and increases elasticity.

Associated Press and Fit Yoga claim the discipline is increasing in popularity among soldiers for improving stamina, mental focus and flexibility. This discipline brings about a general well-being and inner harmony and physical exercise is not its end.

Get a Healthy Acupressure Massage from Your Own Massage Chair

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Steve Esquire

Many traditional forms of medicine are only now starting to be empirically validated by Western Science. Now many of the Eastern forms of healing are starting to go more mainstream in the health care industry. Take acupressure which derived from acupuncture. Acupressure uses the application of firm pressure to help manipulate the energy flow in the body. Now massage chair recliners have built technologies that integrated the use of acupressure.

Acupressure massage is based on sets of meridian lines that run through the body. These meridian lines have certain junctions called trigger points. The trigger points can enhance or hinder the energy flow in the body. Acupressure utilizes certain methods to stimulate these trigger points to control and regulate the energy flow in the body. There are a number of definitive techniques that help to control the energy flow and to restore balance back to the body.

Many of the best massage chair brands like Panasonic, Omega and Sanyo include a body scan technology to accurately identify an individual persons acupressure points. The software then adjusts the massage for each person. There are over 300 acupressure points that have been identified throughout the body. Acupressure uses these trigger points to manipulate the flow of energy throughout the body and to help to remove blockages.

The massage chair performs the scan of the individual and then depending on the acupressure program, the massage will target the trigger points on the back. Some chairs use slow kneading in combination with firm pressure. Other chairs use gentle pressure with light, quick tapping. The programs in different chair models can vary as well as between manufacturers. The best is to try some different massage chairs to find out which ones are right for you.

To help you relax some massage chairs incorporate other features to compliment the acupressure massage. Most spas have soft meditative music to help the mind to relax and get away from thinking about the stresses of the day. Some massage chairs have MP3 players built in with headphones to help you to relax. You can also find heat therapy, where there are heating elements constructed into the chair. Heat helps to reduce swelling and increase blood flow.

The utilization of acupressure improves lymph flow. The lymph system is the cleaner of last resort. What the blood does not clean is left for the lymph system. Acupressure helps to flush more toxins from the system. You may not know that acupressure also provides these benefits:

Reduction in blood pressure; Reduction in stress; Increased awareness; Increased energy

The ancient Chinese pioneered the use of acupressure massage. They discovered that your trigger points are correlated to greater healing and longevity. These treatments were effective if done on a recurring basis. This is perhaps the greatest challenge of massage is getting it done frequently. Now, with massage chairs, one can have affordable access to these important therapies. Getting recurring massage from an economic perspective is much cheaper with a massage recliner.

A Real Runner's High: Integrating Running, Yoga and Meditation

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Eric Cech

We've all heard about, or even experienced ourselves, the Runner's High: a pleasant euphoria of endorphin-induced bliss. This is the exhilarating feeling of really taking care of our bodies, hearts and minds. Though the feeling is somewhat fleeting -- a few hours after the exercise session and the feeling wanes. Well, what if there were ways to extend that feeling, perhaps indefinitely, and maybe deepen it to become a more profound experience of happiness and joy? Many individuals are finding the combined disciplines of exercise, yoga asana, and meditation can lead to this result.

A little about each discipline: Any somewhat vigorous exercise will do, not just running. Running, however, is exceptionally convenient -- put on a pair of shoes and get out the door. It can be done in nearly any condition at any time. Trail running even gets you out into nature for a time, maybe offering a more fulfilling experience. The vigorous exercise improves many, many measurable conditions of our bodies; the result being a positive effect on our overall health and wellbeing.

Yoga is gaining significant interest in North America. As it does, the understanding of the practice is moving beyond just the physical postures. Yoga was originally practiced as a means to develop the body's potential for spiritual growth. Now it has been found that regular practice, like running, also has a profound effect on our health. The increase in flexibility, calmness and energy levels has the yoga community growing by leaps and bounds. It also has a significant positive impact on other physical exercise practices, allowing a more efficient creation of energy and greater enjoyment of any vigorous exercise.

Finally, meditation can be thought of as exercise for the mind. We in the States tend to focus on exercising the body, as the results are easily measured. But the mind is more vague in this respect. If we spend a half an hour meditating, have we made our minds stronger? If we do it properly, and with the same conviction of our physical practices, the experts will answer with a resounding 'yes'. Some even say the benefits last longer than physical exercise -- whereas the body will lose conditioning relatively quickly, the mind will retain the gains for an even longer time.

Interested in learning more? The Shambhala Mountain Center in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, is offering a 4 day retreat this August 21st through 24th to help folks improve their practice in all these areas, and make a stronger connection between all three. For more information, visit the center's website at www.shambhalamountain.org.

The Different Styles of Yoga - And Which Will Be Best For You

Yoga in Sanskrit stands for union and it denotes a union or balance between the spirit, body and mind so there is a state of harmony. Reduce Your Batwings - Arm Exercises For Women

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Ned D'Agostino

Too many women are embarrassed by excess skin under their arms that never seems to stop moving when the arm does. However there are a few arm exercises for women and can help with this problem. These exercises will reduce or even eliminate these so called "batwings."

Depending on your condition, you need to realize that these exercises will not eliminate the problem in all cases. If, for example, you have lost a lot of weight, you will reduce the problem but not get rid of it completely. And if surgery is not an option for you, these will certainly help. You'll be increasing your muscle size, not only giving you less loose skin but increasing your strength as well. And there's a way to use these same exercises to reduce you stomach fat as well.

Just add a Pilates ball to the routine for the extra benefits. This large, rubber, air filled ball is sometimes known as a stabilization ball. That's because if you do the routine on the ball you'll be forced to stabilize yourself. That means using just about all the muscles in your body. The extra benefits make using the ball well worth the extra effort that is needed to do the workout.

The only other thing you'll need is a couple of dumbbells weighing between 3 and 5 pounds. You'll need one for each hand. The stabilization ball is optional and you can use a stool instead.

Sit on the ball or stool with a weight in each hand. Get yourself in a good balanced position then do the following:

Start by forming a 90 degree angle with your elbow. Your upper arm should be parallel to the floor while your lower arm with the weights in each hand should be pointing to the ceiling. Be sure you are sitting up straight so you feel a little stretch in your back as well.

Now start the exercise by lifting your upper arms straight up to the sky. If you're on a ball, you'll also feel some abdominal tightening because you will also be working to keep your balance. When your arms are straight up, your palms with the weights should be facing each other.

From this position you will slowly lower the weights down below your head in the back so that your elbows are pointing up. Make sure you do this slowly for two reasons. First you don't want the weights to just drop back or you won't be using your muscles. You'll simply be letting gravity do the work. Second, by moving slowly you reduce the risk of injury.

Next you will lift the weights back over your head. Again this is done slowly. Repeat this motion 10 to 12 times, take short rest, and do it again 10 to 12 times. If possible try to do three sets of 10 reps. You'll feel a small burning in your biceps and triceps. This is good as it tells you that you are doing the exercise right and giving your muscles a proper workout.

Once doing three sets becomes easy, it's time to increase the amount of weight you use.

These arm exercises are relatively simple and soon you'll notice the flabby skin decrease as your muscles grow. But if it seems too hard, there's no reason you can't start slower. Eliminate the stabilization ball and add it as you become stronger. The same goes for the weights. Start with less and work your way up. Do fewer reps or sets to start and gradually increase these as well. Don't make it too hard on yourself or you'll give up too soon. By the same token, don't make it too easy. Realize that with less weight and without the ball your results will be slower, but you will still see results.

Whether you're looking for reduce batwings or simply look better by increasing strength and tone, these arm exercises for women can get you where you want to be.

An Astounding Art - Tae kwon do

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

by Kalynn Amadio

When you think of mortal combat, does the word art come to mind?

Probably not.

The martial arts have a side that few people ever see, it is a soft side planted in philosophical theory and not usually noted by those not in the arts. This softer side is just one great reason for kids to learn martial arts.

Many parents worry that teaching their kids martial arts will make them more aggressive and more likely to fight.  The opposite is actually true. And there is a fundamental reason why.

Many martial artists refer to their training in two parts.  Observe the ancient Chinese symbol of yin/yang which visually tells a tale of everything having an opposite, like hot and cold, earth and heavens, fire and water.

The martial arts external side is what we are used to seeing in the movies and on our televisions. External art is the hard, violent and often deadly force characters use to punish or overcome their adversaries. Yet, that is merely Hollywood's view.

A martial art is never, never taught only at its external, physical root. As with the yin-yang, the martial arts are surrounded by philosophical underpinnings of peace and harmony that form the internal, mental root. Specifically, internal martial arts study embraces the philosophy of Consequentialism or "right action."

The philosophy of Consequentialism is a moral value that says producing the right consequences is the highest calling any person has.  Since all actions produce results, martial artists practice choosing the right action.  They believe it is their duty to try and always choose the right action to bring the best consequences for the benefit of mankind.

Nearly all martial arts share origins in Asian nations where Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism began. It's not surprising that martial arts instruction adapts itself to the core philosophies of these teachings. These ideals require great patience, insight and acceptance of others.

There is a Korean proverb quoted by author Doug Cook that roughly translates, "Peace within the individual brings peace within the family; peace in the family brings peace in the community; peace in the community, peace in the country and peace throughout the world."  Delivering the highest moral consequences through "right action" can cause a domino effect throughout society and the world.

And yet, Consequentialism is just one of the internal philosophical roots of the martial arts. There are different types of kicks and stances, punches and blocks that form external martial arts. Likewise, there are many parts and variations to the internal martial arts.

Any child who is fortunate enough to study martial arts learns exacting physical motions that increase strength and flexibility while learning self defense techniques and improving confidence. But at the same time, they learn to be a better person, a better citizen of the world.  They learn that because they can physically defend themselves that they no longer need to. They have learned the "right action."

Suddenly, peace throughout the world no longer seems unreachable.

Do You Want to Learn to Take Control of Your Life in 10 Steps?

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Dick Ingersoll

At first glimpse, it would appear that positive thinking and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have nothing to do with one another. But a lot of us with ADD acquire negative thinking patterns as we become defeated by our challenges and frequent feelings of being overwhelmed. This negative outlook then makes it even more difficult for us to manage those challenges and move forward.

Applying positive thinking allows people with ADD to concentrate on our strengths and accomplishments, which increases well being and motivation. This, in turn, enables us to pass more time making progress, and less time feeling down and stuck. The following tips supply practical suggestions that you can use to help shift into more positive thinking patterns:

1. Take Good Care of Yourself - It is a great deal easier to be optimistic when you are eating well, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep.

2. Remind Yourself of the Things You're Grateful For - Stresses and challenges don't seem quite as bad when you are unceasingly reminding yourself of the things that are right in life. Taking only 60 seconds a day to stop and value the good things will make a huge difference.

3. Look for the Proof Rather Than Making Assumptions - A concern for not being liked or accepted sometimes leads us to take for granted that we know what other people are thinking, but our concerns are generally not reality. If you have a concern that an acquaintance or family member's bad humor is due to something you did, or that your colleagues are secretly gossiping about you when you turn your back, speak up and ask them. Do not waste time worrying that you did something wrong unless you have proof that there is something to worry about.

4. Refrain from Practicing Absolutes - Have you ever told a partner "You're ALWAYS late!" or complained to a friend "You NEVER call me!"? Thinking and speaking in absolutes like 'always' and 'never' makes the situation look tougher than it is, and programs your brain into believing that certain people are incapable of delivering.

5. Detach From Negative Thoughts - Your thoughts can't hold any power over you if you don't judge them. Whenever you notice yourself holding a negative thought, detach from it, witness it, and don't follow it.

6. Squash the "ANTs" - In his book "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life," Dr. Daniel Amen discusses "ANTs" - Automatic Negative Thoughts. These are the bad thoughts that are normally reactionary, like "Those people are laughing, they must be discussing me," or "The boss would like to talk to me? It must be negative!" When you become aware of these thoughts, realize that they're nothing more than ANTs and squash them!

7. Practice Lovin', Touchin' & Squeezin' (Your Friends and Family) - You don't have to be an expert to recognize the benefits of a good hug. Supportive physical contact with friends, loved ones, and even pets, is an instant pick-me-up. One research study on this subject had a waitress touch a few of her customers on the arm as she handed them their checks. She received higher tips from these customers than from the ones she didn't touch!

8. Increase Your Social Activity - By expanding social activity, you reduce loneliness. Surround yourself with healthy, cheerful people, and their positive energy will affect you in a positive way!

9. Volunteer for an Organization, or Help another Person - Everyone feels better after assisting. You can volunteer your time, your money, or your resources. The more positive energy you put out into the universe, the more you will receive in return.

10. Use Pattern Interrupts to Combat Rumination - If you find yourself speculating, an excellent way to stop it is to disturb the pattern and force yourself to do something entirely different. Rumination is like hyper-focus on something negative. It's never productive, because it is not rational or solution-oriented, it is just excessive concern. Try changing your physical surroundings - go for a walk or sit outside. You could also call a friend, pick up a book, or listen to some music.

When it concerns the corporate world, protocol is pretty much the religion. To recognize the things to be done are the basics of productivity, but interaction and maintaining a steady mind makes up the entire path to true productivity. There are those who seem to work well even under pressure, but they're rare ones and we are human and imperfect. To get these little things like stress under our skins won't solve our troubles. Sometimes it takes a bit of courage to acknowledge that we're turning into workaholics than tell ourselves that we're not doing our best.

The selection of Tai Chi DVDs at your local sports stores or fitness stores will likely depend on the size of the store, as larger stores tend to carry more products.

In addition to visiting a local retail store, like one of your local book stores, sport stores, or fitness supply stores, you should also be able to find similar stores online. These types of establishments are often referred to as online retail stores. What is nice about buying a Tai Chi DVD online is that you should have access to hundreds of different retailers, as well as an unlimited number of DVDs to purchase. It is also important to note that many online retailers allow their customers to rate products that they have bought, including a Tai Chi DVD. These ratings, if you are able to find them, should give you great insight into the Tai Chi DVDs that are available for purchase.

When it comes to buying a Tai Chi DVD, you will find that you have a number of different options. In addition to being available for sale online, a large number of Tai Chi DVDs can also be purchased locally, from book stores, sports stores, and Tai Chi learning centers. Wherever you choose to buy your Tai Chi DVD from, it is advised that you keep the above mentioned points in mind when doing so.

The Advantages of a Meditation Chair

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

I have back problems and sitting in lotus position is difficult for me. My master likes everyone to use that position but I much prefer sitting comfortably. That's why this article intrigued me. ka

By Keira Adams

Among the most difficult aspects of meditating is discovering the perfect seated posture, since your legs often fall asleep during an extended period of meditating. Although there are meditation cushions to be had, there are many people who choose to use a meditation chair instead.

If you examine a meditation chair, the first thing you'll discover is that it doesn't seem that different from a kitchen chair. It has four legs and a back. But what it does better is help make you more comfy by molding to your body, which keeps cramps at bay and allows for total relaxation.

The stuff that makes this happen is known as buckwheat hull. It adapts to your form, thereby offering a more solid seat due to the ergonomic design which stops the user from slumping throughout the most focused periods of meditation, because it's tilted somewhat forward.

A good illustration of a meditation chair is the Seagrass. This product was conceived by a meditation practitioner who found that it was quite challenging to meditate when seated in a lotus pose. This chair permits you to cross your ankles or feet and draw them up if you're weary of laying them on the floor. As well, it allows for appropriate support of the backbone so you won't go through any back pain following the session.

The Chinese meditation chair is possibly the most ancient model as it has been in existence for hundreds of years. It does not possess ergonomic characteristics such as the ones we use these days, however it boasts an especially wide base so that you have enough space to cross your legs. It doesn't come with any padding, however you'll be able to quickly take care of that.

One more type of meditation chair is the Tilt Seat, also called the kneeling chair. The great thing about this meditation chair is that it doesn't place pressure on the knees and could also be utilized as a table. It's possible to comfortably read a book if you lay a pillow on the floor.

There are more meditation chairs to be had and they are available in assorted sizes and shapes. An alternative for those who desire something larger is the meditation bench. With the greater surface area, those who favor the lotus position can sit without placing pressure on the legs. Something like it is known as the cane chair.

While picking out the perfect meditation chair, you are advised to take into account your body size and height, as well as your need for comfort. Do not overlook back support because this will also help to enhance your posture.

The beauty of meditation chairs is that they're lightweight and moveable. They could effortlessly be stashed away in a closet after you're finished, or it's possible to purchase styles that harmonize with your interior design.

The meditation chair is configured to keep you relaxed and comfortable during the time that you're in session. If you're committed to enhancing your health and fighting stress, purchasing a meditation chair will certainly be a wise investment.

ADHD and Tae kwon do - Your Child's Success Strategy

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

by Kalynn Amadio

The child that has ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is gifted. This special child is creative and spontaneous with the ability to hyper focus on any interesting task.

Conversely, this same child is a challenge to parents because they can often be aggressive, hyper, distractible and impulsive. The world views these children as "hard to handle" which can permanently harm self-esteem.

Children are frequently distracted or inattentive and often impulsive on occasion, but a child living with ADHD experiences these attributes most of the time.  A parent has a great deal of influence in helping their child perceive these character traits as advantageous, not a liability.

Notwithstanding, ADHD is not just a shortness of capacity to remain attentive, but also the skill to focus intently on the subject matter of choice. Kids with ADHD don't actually lack focus but have the tendency to focus unsuitably and are quick to become bored with a task.

Sports can be either constructive or negative for all children but more so for the ADHD child.  Expelling extra energy is a positive side to sports, but playing on a team is often frustrating to the child, coach and teammates. It can be difficult to learn to adhere to the rules and fulfill particular needs of the team.

Tae kwon do, a martial art, can be a tremendously beneficial for the ADHD child as it permits controlled aggressive behavior in a safe environment. An instructor provides direction that is immediately followed so that it retains relevance and gives instant satisfaction.

Tae kwon do emphasizes self-control, self-confidence and self-esteem as an inherent part of its instruction for all students.  For the ADHD student, this emphasis can be crucial to turning negative character traits into positives.

Part of tae kwon do instruction is the philosophy of "right action" which is to reach a point where you inherently know how to react in a situation with no thought. This teaching helps the impulsive ADHD child curb those impulses. Classes are exciting with lots of jumping, kicking, spinning and punching so boredom is never an issue. Hyperactivity doesn't exist in a tae kwon do class. Action is rewarded.

An important quality of tae kwon do instruction is respect and acceptance of all people despite the labels society has placed on them.

ADHD is not a boy problem. An equal number of girls are diagnosed with ADD the counterpart lacking the hyperactivity component.  It is a genetically passed difference in character. In fact, a large study found that 25% of children with Attention Deficit had a parent with the problem.

You can't outgrow Attention Deficit, so it becomes crucial to find ways to lessen the burdens of the disadvantages. Help your child learn to see the constructive aspects of their character and turn those traits into successes.

The child with Attention Deficit bears the same positive characteristics that are cultivated by the successful in society. Artists, entrepreneurs, politicians and athletes are a few of the successful people whom history has described with classic ADHD traits. Some of the most creative, intense, spontaneous, tenacious and quick thinking people in history have probably had ADHD; Thomas Edison, Mozart and Winston Churchill to name but a few. That's not bad company at all.

What is the 'hot' in hot yoga?

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Vanessa Herremans

Hot Yoga

Hot Yoga is a series of yoga poses done in a heated room. Hot Yoga's mission is to touch as many lives as possible with the power and wisdom of Yoga. Hot Yoga is not advised for pregnant women, since it can raise the core body temperature. It is essential to have your own yoga mat and towel when doing Hot Yoga since you will be sweating so much. People come to Hot Yoga to look beautiful on the outside, but they stay because they are inspired to be the best version of themselves.

Yoga

Yoga is intimately connected to the religious beliefs and practices of the Indian religions. Yoga philosophy is one of the six systems of Hindu philosophy. Yoga is not a religion, but an aid to the practice of the basic spiritual truths in all religions. Yoga can be practiced by a Christian or a Buddhist, a Parsee, a Muslim, a Sufi or an atheist.

Karma Yoga

Karma Yoga is performance of actions dwelling in union with the Divine, removing attachment and remaining balanced ever in success and failure. Karma means not only action, but also the result of an action. The Law of Karma is one of the fundamental doctrines not only in Hinduism, but also in Buddhism and in Jainism. The path of Karma Yoga eventually leads to the attainment of Bliss of the Self.

Tantra Yoga

Tantra Yoga teaches us to identify the various factors that influence our thoughts and feelings and to transcend the obstacles to our evolution arising from ignorance, intolerance, attachment to our animal nature, and selfishness. Tantra Yoga asserts that desires are natural and that as long as we are embodied, we will have them. By means of physical and ritual cleaning, breathing exercises (pranayama), contemplation, visualization (of yantras and deities), repetition of a mantra (mantra japa), Tantra Yoga helps to unfold our divine nature.

Bhakti Yoga

Bhakti Yoga is pure spiritual devotion, of love for God which is Love. Bhakti Yoga is the most direct method, the shortest way to experience the divine. Bhakti Yoga lets one see the absolute manifested in all experience. There is nothing higher than love and Bhakti Yoga is the religion of love.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is a particular system of Yoga described by Yogi Swatmarama, a yogic sage of the 15th century in India, and compiler of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Hot Hatha Yoga is the physical form of yoga designed to bring balance and well-being into your life. Iyengar's method, a form of hatha yoga, is based on giving primacy to the physical alignment of the body in the poses. Later, with the rise of Hatha yoga, asana came to refer to all the "postures" Pranayama ("Lengthening Prāna"): Prāna, life force, or vital energy, particularly, the breath, "āyāma", to lengthen or extend Pratyahara ("Abstraction"): Withdrawal of the sense organs from external objects.

Is Your Child On The Road to Obesity? 4 Mistakes You Can Fix Now

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Dorthy Weatherbush

Everywhere you look, you'll see the signs of an obesity epidemic in the United States. Adults struggling with their weight, levering themselves into and out of cars. Many so morbidly obese that they'll circle a parking lot four or five times before parking rather than be forced to walk an extra hundred feet.

For some people, this is tied to genetics - there are several genetic triggers that, when we lived hand to mouth as a species, were survival traits. Being able to store fat in prosperous times was an insurance of survival in the winter. Also in that calculus lies the fact that we have, as a population, become more sedentary as technology has progressed.

This becomes even clearer when we witness the growing problem of children with obesity. Nutrition counselors agree that for every 3 to 5 pounds a child is over their normal weight level before they reach puberty, that child will become on average 15 to 30 pounds before they reach the age of thirty. To add to this, Type II diabetes is now become one of the fastest growing diseases among teens.

At the ages of 12 - 16 is when most young girls and boys are self conscious about their bodies. Even "normal looking" kids get teased. If we allow our children to continue down a slippery slope toward obesity, we are setting them up for a very difficult childhood. Parents must be told that healthy eating habits and not Slimfast diet shakes or Medifast meals are the key to weight loss and a nutritious lifestyle.

On the positive side of things, I want to let you know that there is hope. There is an easy way to solve this downward trend.

Remember when you were a kid? You know, before video games like the Nintendo Wii. You actually had friends who played outside with you. You had energy and used it.

After a long day of playing, you were met with a cool glass of milk, water or juice. A sugary cake or pie were a nice end to a full day of activity and not what's now become the new breakfast of champions.

While the fast food outlets might not want you to know this, many parents are successfully teaching their kids to make healthy eating decisions. Today however, water too many of our youth is like the library, they've heard about it but never fully experienced it. Listen up parents. Sodas, juices or energy drinks are not a substitute for water. When properly hydrated, hunger pangs were shown to decrease significantly compared to those individuals who consumed no water.

Another simple trick is to schedule snack times along with family style meals. As an example, rather than Johnny eating a snack whenever he is bored, you establish certain times during the day when he will have a snack and what his choices are. By doing this early, it minimizes the impulse eating and helps children make proper choices.

Staying physically active is an absolute necessity. Children are usually mirror images of their parents. If you as a parent live a sedentary life, the chances of your child duplicating your example are very high. If you have little league teams in your town, encourage your children to participate. Not all kids are athletic but all kids need to be active. In addition, set aside at least one day in the week where the entire family is physically active together. It could be a walk in the park or playing tag in the backyard.

Start early with your children. Sit down with them and honestly and directly explain why living a healthy lifestyle is important. If you are reading this today, you are the future of your family. An always remember, nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels.
