Calm and Focus the Mind with Meditation

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network
By Keira Adams

You know about meditating, but do you know just what it involves? Meditation is a practice that calls for intense concentration on a single thought or object to help focus the mind. The person turns away from outward concerns and focuses on the inner being.

Meditation techniques are said to be of Vedic Hinduism origin and are traditionally practiced in the eastern religions. But these days this practice is becoming more and more popular in western societies.

People want to practice meditation for a number of reasons. Some use it to help focus their mind on God; others use it for personal development. A number of individuals discover improved health and peace of mind through this practice. There are even people who hope that when they begin to meditate, they will be enlightened.

Maybe you think that meditating is just another activity you should be doing to become healthier, sort of like dieting or exercising. Almost everyone who starts something new will have a vague sense of what this activity will do for them. However, if you don't know what you expect to gain, you most likely won't stick with meditating in the long run.

If you don't have clear goals, it can be hard to figure out where to begin. It can also lead to discouragement when your expectations aren't being met. The best thing to do is to start by identifying what you hope to achieve from practicing meditation. Learn as much as you can about the most effective techniques for reaching that goal. After that, just get going.

Theoretically, the practice of meditating is quite easy. You just sit quietly and focus on a specific object or thought. But this is actually much more difficult than it sounds. You might not realize it, but your mind is always racing. This makes it hard to concentrate on just one thing at a time.

So start slowly. Practice your breathing first. This is the heart of meditation. Sit comfortably and inhale and exhale deeply for several minutes. By taking regular breaths, you will improve your ability to focus, which is critical when meditating.

If you catch yourself thinking about other things while meditating, focus again on your breathing. Meditation is all about concentrating. If you realize that you've gone off track, just gently guide yourself back to the right state of mind. Don't give up; it takes time to get good at meditation, so continue practicing.

Meditation can help you achieve peace of mind. With all the problems we face daily at work, at home, and the world in general, it's important that you regularly experience a few minutes of peace.

Stress and Health Don't Stress - Decompress

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Marlene Affeld

We live in a chaos filled world with commitments, family and professional pressures, personal challenges and seemingly overwhelming obstacles. Most days we manage. We think, if I can just get through next Thursday, next month or make it through the winter gray days I can get my life together. But time passes, the days race by and suddenly your life is rushing up at you.

When the burden feels too heavy, we feel depleted and unable to meet the many demands placed upon us and we experience stress.

In moderation, stress is actually a good thing. Stress motivates us to stay focused and alert and increases our productivity. One type of stress, eustress, is actually a necessary part of a balanced, meaningful life. Eustress is the type of stress we experience when falling in love, riding a roller coaster or participating in a risky activity or extreme sport. Eustress adds spice and flavor to our experiences, making us feel vital and alive.

Problems arise when life's demands exceed our limitations and negates our ability to cope. This type of stress is called distress and can become an ominous threat to both our emotional and physical well-being. Stress impacts not only on our bodies, but on our thoughts, emotions, relationships and behavior.

When we feel threatened, whether to our personal safely or our emotional equilibrium, our bodies rapidly respond - we are ready for "flight or fight". Stress is both a physiological and psychological reaction to events that disturb our personal sense of balance. Alarming experiences, either real or imagined, can trigger a stress reaction. When danger is sensed, the body's defenses activate automatically with a wave of over 1400 reactions including the dumping of a huge variety of stress hormones, including adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine, into our systems. These chemicals race through our bloodstream, readying us to quickly react to the perceived danger.

We have all experienced a response to stress: rapid pounding or fluttering heartbeat, shallow breathing, blood pressure soars, muscles tensing up with anxiety and all our senses on full alert. It isn't pleasant and is often terrifying. We feel out of control, spiraling downward, bracing for what can only be a dreadful crash.

This primal "flight or fight" response is experienced by everyone that encounters stress although the threshold that puts us in distress varies from person to person; what bothers me may not bother you, what frightens me, you may meet with confidence and assurance.

For primitive man this response was life saving in that it enhanced his ability to react to danger and physical challenges. In response to stress, heart rate and blood pressure escalate to increase the flow of blood to the brain to improve decision making, clotting occurs more rapidly to prevent blood loss and blood sugar rises to furnish additional fuel for energy. These and many more automatic changes in our bodies persist as long as the threat continues. When the danger passes our bodies return to normal.

Modern day stress tends to be insidious, more persistent and pervasive that our ancestors experienced. Contemporary stress most often originates from psychological rather than physical threats, however, our bodies do not recognize the difference. Unfortunately, our bodies respond with the same "flight or fight" response to any situation that upsets our personal balance. If we have a bad day at work, problems in our personal relationships or we are stuck in traffic, we react. Physical responses that are meant to support and protect us, are instead, potentially damaging and injurious to our health and well-being.

If you live a fast paced life with a lot of worries, obligations and responsibilities, it is likely that you are running on stress most of the time - escalating into emergency mode with every looming business deadline, family crisis or bill that is due. Repeated or extended activation of the "flight or fight" response is especially dangerous as the more it is activated, the more more difficult it is to shut off. Instead of leveling off once a crisis is over, heart rate, blood pressure and stress hormones remain at an elevated level.

Continuous or prolonged exposure to stress increases our risk of memory problems, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, heart disease, stroke, infection or reduced immune function as well as obesity and stomach ulcers. Because of the extensive damage stress can cause, it is imperative that we learn how to handle stress in a more positive manner and reduce its corrosive impact on our health.

The symptoms of stress often mimic other medical problems. Lack of energy, decreased productivity at work, fatigue, abdominal discomfort, severe headaches, back ache or neck pain as well as chest pain, breathlessness, heart palpitations and cold clammy skin can all be symptoms of stress.

Stress can severely affect our health and well-being and we may not even realize it until the damage is done. If we wish to be pro-active in the pursuit of optimum health, it is important that we understand stress, recognize the symptoms and then take affirmative steps to manage the predictable stress reaction triggers in our daily lives.

There are a number of ways to manage and reduce stress. First, try to find a supportive physician. Share with your doctor the emotions you are experiencing and the physical symptoms your body exhibits when you are exposed to stress. This is an important step in getting the help you need.

Cognitive therapy, a short-term type of psycho-therapy based on the belief that we can change how we feel by changing the way we think about things, is often quite effective.

Stress reduction techniques, such as meditation and yoga, can be beneficial. Talking with family, friends or joining a support group can be emotional lifesavers and help offset our feelings of social isolation. A burden shared is lighter than one carried alone.

It is imperative to our heath and well-being that we make dealing with stress a priority. When stressed, decompress - it is helpful to withdraw from the situation, evaluate your feeling from a distance and gain perspective. Try to breathe deeply, take a walk, re-focus and attempt to think of something else. This too will pass.

Keep your body slim with these movement techniques!

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network
By Lucy Roberts

For people who are interested in exercise, there are several options. Apart from running and jogging, one may join a gym, go for dance classes or perform some basic body building classes at home.

One of the most renowned form of exercise is aerobics. Even though it was first developed in the late 70s, it is still a popular form of exercise today. Aerobics typically involves activities like jogging, running and walking. All these activities are associated with active use of oxygen which increases as the intensity of the exercise increases. The aim of aerobic is to boost your fitness and stamina. If aerobics is performed on a regular basis one can develop decent size muscles, flexibility in the joints and improve strength

Jogging helps in finding the real pulse of your body. You get to know what necessary actions must be taken to keep your body slim. Keep note of how your body reacts to the various conditions.

Yoga that originated in India is a scientific system that combines yoga postures, relaxation, breathing and meditation technique. The original word itself means to 'link'. It aids in helping achieve balance of body, mind and soul. Some experts claim it is a way of life rather than a particular exercise movement.

Tai Chi chuan is designed to provide relaxation in the process of body-conditioning exercise. Tai Chi Chuan, Karate and Judo have their origins in Japan and are still used for mind and body. Fitness experts deem them to be great to the overall health of the body. They require control of the whole body and demand concentration.

It's no coincidence that gyms, personal trainers and producers of exercise videos and DVD's are now heavily incorporating training techniques but martial arts like Karate and Jude hold a place of their own when it comes to body movements. One of the most obvious benefits of doing Karate and Judo is that it provides us with the fitness, strength, skill and techniques necessary to protect ourselves from being attacked by others. At the same time they help a lot in maintaining a good shape.

Give Your Body a Boost by Stretching

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Pat Lowe

One of the most beneficial forms of exercise is stretching, particularly when done regularly. The reason is that it gives the body many valuable benefits. Experts have been extolling the virtues of stretching exercises for many years now. Sales of DVDs teaching how to do the stretches correctly number in the millions each year.

If they knew the benefits they could get from regular stretching, more people might be interested in taking up this activity. The major benefit of stretching is that it improves your body's flexibility. When you do the exercises correctly, you strengthen the tendons attaching the muscles to the bone; this impacts almost all the body's muscles.

There is usually a lower chance of suffering muscle sprains and strains if you stretch often. The reason for this is that the body's muscles get used to moving in various directions. In addition, they become resilient enough to handle unexpected movements, which can lead to injury of the muscles or tendons. You can also improve body strength with regular stretching. This is achieved by the continual challenges placed on the muscles.

Because stretching is a low impact exercise, it is appropriate for people of all ages to do. Stretching exercises for seniors and people with limited mobility help them to regain lost strength and rebuild their muscles. The exercises are also appropriate for young children. Many places have classes where parents and their toddlers can stretch together in a group setting.

The exercise that the stretches provide for the body increases the amount of blood flow through the body. This can improve a number of different ailments. Your body eliminates wastes more rapidly due to improved blood flow. It also moves oxygen from the lungs to the brain and other organs in larger amounts. The blood also flows through the muscles of the body faster. This increases the strength and the health of the muscles in a dramatic way.

Stretching is among the few exercises that benefits the whole body. Plus, the frequency or length of the exercises doesn't really matter. By performing stretching exercises more often, you will see better results more quickly. However, you can become healthier and more mobile even with just a moderate stretching program.

The advantages to your body of performing this low impact form of exercise are reason enough for anyone to start up a daily stretching routine.

Stress Reduction: Foot Reflexology Performed by a Massage Chair

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Steve Esquire

It has been found that reflexology massages can help to reduce your stress and anxiety. We seem to take so little time for us to decompress. We are under constant pressure that builds up in the body and needs to be released. Do you know that a reflexology foot massage can relieve headaches? It is also good to relieve back pain and help to reduce stress while inducing relaxation. Did you know that the best massage chair recliners have effective foot reflexology massages?

Reflexology has been around since ancient times in China, India, and Egypt, but was a lost art for many centuries. It was rediscovered by Dr. William Fitzgerald back in 1913. Dr. Fitzgerald noticed that applying certain pressure to areas of the hand and the foot was linked to other organs in the body. As he focused more on these areas, he noticed that certain zones of the feet and hands were linked to specific organs. As he applied pressure in these areas, he found that a complimentary healing process began for whole body healing.

Dr. Fitzgerald went on to map out these zones and created the first modern reflexology charts. A foot massage uses certain strokes to relax the feet and the individual. However, foot reflexology helps to increase the health and well being of the entire body. As foot reflexology is applied, healing of other parts of the body began. Sometimes, the healing was spontaneous, but more often, the healing takes periodic treatments to sustain.

Why is reflexology massage effective? Interestingly, the body reacts to stress or anxiety based on a flight or fight reaction. The stress reaction mobilizes the body through the nervous system. The feet are ready to run and the hands are ready to fight. The feet and hands need the support of the major organs and muscles to protect the body, so these too are mobilized. Reflexology helps to calm the feet and the major organs and muscles thus reducing the tension of stress and anxiety.

Now with the advance of technology, effective reflexology massages are being integrated into the premier massage chair brands. Companies like Panasonic, Omega among others have developed technology providing foot reflexology massage. The Panasonic EP30004 Real Pro Ultra Massage Chair or the Omega Montage Premier massage chair both incorporate foot reflexology massage. These massage chair recliners can provide daily relief of built up tension and anxiety.

An interesting finding about Foot Reflexology massage is that it must be applied on a frequent basis. This makes a lot of sense, since stress is applied to us on a frequent basis as well. The stress if left unchecked builds up in the body. Muscles become tenser and less flexible. This tension needs to be relieved. The release of this tension must be relieved in parallel to its build up. Foot reflexology applied more frequently is found to be most effective.

A massage chair recliner is a perfect method to receive these health benefits on a continuous basis in the comfort and privacy of your home. Not only does a reflexology foot massage feel great, but it also helps to reduce stress and anxiety from the build up of stress. Many causes of back pain and discomfort are related to the posture and your feet. Relieving the tension from your feet also helps to improve posture and minimize back pain. Check out a shiatsu massage chair as a way to get continuous foot reflexology treatments to improve your overall health and well being.

Understanding Depression and Self Help

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network
I have found that regular exercise goes a long way toward battling depression and its symptoms. If you suffer from depression it is important to maintain a regular exercise routine. ka

By Dane Masters

When I was a teen and reading everything from novels to Reader's Digests to Mom or Dad's encyclopedias and self-help books, I was fascinated with a particular malaise that I had felt for years but had no words to articulate. I had most of the symptoms of depression; therefore, I was bent on reading articles about depression. That was about thirty years ago, so while the info then was more limited than it is now, I have a better understanding of an illness (or syndrome) that severely impacts those with it and those who live with persons who have it: such statistics that hold that in any given year, some 13 to 14 million people will suffer some degree of depressive disorder (according to www.add-adhd-help-center.com).

I cannot remember the title, but one of the very first articles I read, contained information regarding depression that still remains true today.

People suffering from Clinical Depression sleep too much, or suffer from sleeplessness, are irritable and restless.

He or she loses interest in once-enjoyable activities and pastimes, in food, and in taking care of his or her person hygiene needs.

The person suffering from depression also consistently feels tired, or is constantly exhausted, and feels they never have enough energy to get through the day.

More studies have revealed the numbers of people suffering from depressive disorders and you are able to find out more about this on www.add-adhd-help-center.com. Where you will see that other symptoms include:

Perpetual, or persistent sadness, worthlessness, and/or attitudes of futility

Weight loss or gain

Overeating as well as under-eating;

Persistent physical manifestations of (but not limited to) depression-such as headache, pain, stomach and digestion problems-all of which may be resistant to treatment

Obsession with thoughts of suicide and or dying;

I found out-in my forties-I have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). A sister disorder is depression. It makes sense that I was fascinated with, intrigued by, or made it imperative to study the disorder of depression, as wherever I went, ADD went, and wherever ADD went, depression went. If you have ADD, depression, and/or experience symptoms of one or both, please know there are many, many books, articles, people, treatments, and solutions. You are not alone and you are not hopeless. You can get that refrigerator you are carrying around off your back. You can stop eating everything in that refrigerator, can wake up from heavy-boned sleep and escape, can shut up the seemingly convincing voice that recommends suicide as a solution, and can actually, one day, smile or even laugh at something again.

What a Healthy Diet Really Means

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Christopher Fitch

Weight loss is not an instant process. When the calorie intake has not burned totally, the leftover residue forms fat and thus a person becomes obese. This excess weight cannot be shed instantly. It needs perseverance, integrity, and meticulous planning. The planning of weight loss is made up of three factors: the exercise that burns the extra calories, a healthy lifestyle and the most important factor: a healthy diet.

A healthy diet supports your immune system. It doesn't mean starving yourself while you track your calorie count and opt for a single can of cola instead of five or six small meals. To that end, it also doesn't mean settling for bland foods that taste like cardboard. What it does mean is matching your calorie needs with your lifestyle and physiological requirements. In other words, your diet will be different than your friend's; and it should be.

The most successful diet plans promote the consumption of anti-oxidants. These work as anti-aging agents and also help to keep the skin youthful by rejuvenating tissue that has been damaged over time. Some vitamins contain these elements and are strongly recommended as part of your overall diet. The same holds true for fiber. Most fruits contain both anti-oxidants and fiber and as such are a vital element to a healthy diet.

Even after Atkins' no-carb diet has been proven more harmful than beneficial, a lot of people still believe that they need to eliminate their carb intake. This is untrue. Again, remember the lifestyle factor! What you should normally see happen is a reduction of carb intake, not full elimination. This means balancing your carb intake with your protein intake. Ideally, you should give preference to animal and plant protein, which can serve as a carb replacement or supplement. Now, as a caveat, this doesn't mean going crazy with a high-protein diet. In fact, some protein like most red meats should be avoided altogether as a result of their high fat content (as a catch-22, leaner meats are an important component to your diet).

Dairy products are to be skipped from the range of healthy diet ingredients because of its adverse effect on obesity. Instead low cal yogurt; low-cal ice cream or double toned milk can be perfect for intake. There are many health drinks available in market; these health drinks can be consumed but the intake of calories with per drink need to be checked and calculated meticulously.

Lastly, a regular exercise routine helps to shed extra fluid in our system. It helps keep the skin hydrated, porous, and healthy, and helps burn the current intake of calories as well as burn stored fat. A vital ingredient to the success of an exercise routine is consistency and... water consumption, eight to ten cups daily. Water works best because it flushes the system without adding calories. Plus, it helps keep the muscles hydrated, meaning less chance of cramping and less likelihood of skipping out on an exercise routine.

As you have seen, a healthy diet is more than fasting. As cliche as it sounds, it really is a lifestyle change. But that lifestyle change, including the exercise and diet need not be bland and boring. Incorporate tasty foods that align with your individual needs. Invite friends or partners to exercise with you, or don't even call it exercise -- call it an after-dinner walk or jog, call it cleaning up the garage and you will see that joining a gym or equipping your own home-gym will become much easier and exciting.

What is Guided Meditation

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network
Meditation is an important part of your martial arts training.

By Bill Bodri

At its base element, meditation is an exercise in mental control. In the exercise you elevate your thought processes beyond the mere physical, which allows you to relax more deeply.

Meditation involves high concentration on a fixed point of reference. However, in today's world of extreme anxiety and stress most of us find personal meditation is hard to achieve. In these cases, guided mediation is the perfect way to relax the mind, with the help of a meditation partner.

Methods of guided meditations are diverse. Guidance can come in the form of a quiet tale or descriptive phrases telling of a place of peaceful relaxation or in the form of instruction telling how the mind and body can become relaxed.

Your choice of time will help you to succeed at your meditations. Early morning or late evenings are popular times because of the quiet and easy ambiance that is usually present at those times.

By meditating two times a daily you will get more practiced at it and the method will become a normal and more easily done.

Soothing music also helps relax the atmosphere. The use of calming, fragrant incense to is also a good idea.

As you choose your partner, you might look at someone not of your sex. They should have a voice that soothes you and that you find enjoyable to listen to as you will be doing that a lot.

Before beginning you both position yourselves sitting up face-to-face and focus on your breathing, the basis of all meditation.

The main idea is to direct your partner into focusing on a specific object, feature or, natural element. This might be facilitated by imagining a glowing ball of light (this symbolizes healing), this is shedding its light on your partner like a warm glowing sun.

The person meditating must feel this object or feature, object or element. This glow should become one with their body and give them feelings of warm healthfulness. As this is felt and the idea visualized, you can add other visualizations.

The length of each session depends on the compatibility of the partners and how well they relate to each other. If the guide feels that the other person has already achieved a higher state of relaxation, he/she can slowly bring him back to his present surroundings.

Guided meditation provides you a level of relaxation that is not achieved even by sleep. In this process, you're not asleep; you're in a higher state of awareness that allows you to cut yourself off from the external world.

One of the easiest ways to guided meditation is to get a guided meditation CD, find a quiet place, switch off your phone, and get down to relaxing. Be sure to wear comfortable, loose clothes and pick a time of the day when you're least likely to be interrupted.

Initiates to meditation can spend a small amount of time to begin with. The length of the cd is only 15 to 25 minutes, plus time for reflection, for maximum effect, at the end of the meditation, This method is very effective in relieving sress and anxiety on a daily basis.

Sports massages, quite simply can help reduce sports-related injuries such as sprains, fractures, spasms and pulled muscles.

Many of the high end massage chairs from Sanyo, Panasonic, and Omega have built in features specifically for athletes. These shiatsu massage chairs come with a variety of massage therapies including Reflexology, Swedish, Shiatsu, Acupressure and Deep Tissue massage. Sports therapy massage for athletes is as integral to a serious sport regimen as lifting weights. Massage increases fluid circulation, reduces pain, and speeds recovery after an injury.

You may not be a professional athlete, but a weekend warrior. Weekend warriors are more at risk since they play more intermittent. If your passion is any type of active sport such as tennis, golf, basketball, or softball, then you know the importance of warming up and warming down your muscles by stretching. The Omega Montage Premier massage chair has a lower body stretch function. This lower body traction functions by using air pressure to hold your feet in the footrest. The footrest is first raised and then lowered down in 3 steps. As the footrest goes down to each lower position, it stretches and elongates your muscles from the hips down. Proper stretching helps you perform better and reduces the chances of injury.

Sport Massage Therapy is a combination of two distinct massage techniques: Swedish and Shiatsu. Swedish massage techniques use long, flowing strokes to increase blood circulation and flow. Shiatsu works on two levels. The first level is the stimulation of acupressure points throughout the back. The second level is the application of a gentle squeezing action to particular areas of the body. Shiatsu helps relax the muscles and also to relieve tension. Massage chair recliners use both techniques to provide a full back massage. The lower body is massaged with an air compression system. Panasonic, for instance, uses the air compression system to gently squeeze, hold and release the muscles of the lower body. The Panasonic EP-3222 massage recliner has an incredible 33 airbags in the seat and footrest to perform lower body massages.

Many people view sports like golf as not very stressful on the body. Although golf does not seem too strenuous, golf puts significant stress on the body. When one swings the club, the muscles on one side of the body are utilized in a one direction. This repetitive one-sided activity causes some muscle groups to be over-utilized while others are under-utilized. Any golfers you know complain about bad backs? I cannot count that high! A simple swinging motion done repetitively can cause tendon and muscle and tendon damage. This is especially true if you do not warm up and warm down properly. Are you looking for a great way to get ready before your strenuous activity? A massage chairs is a very practical option to getting a professional massage. Getting an invigorating shiatsu massage before your golf game may just take a few strokes off your game.

A shiatsu massage chair provides a thorough sports massage therapy. Getting a proper warm up for your muscles increases their flexibility, relieves tension and increases blood flow. A massage chair can be an integral part of your warm up. However, massage chairs are certainly not cheap, but then again, neither is being injured. A proper warm up can help to avoid injury. Is all this warming up really worth it because shiatsu massage chairs are not cheap. How much is that worth? If a massage chair can help reduce the risk of injury and enhancing your performance, then its invaluable. Whether you are a Weekend Warrior or a Professional Athlete, your most valuable player must just be your shiatsu massage chair recliner.

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Bi Kun tan

Are you wondering what acupuncture is and why it's used? Well it is typically a last resort for people who can't seem to find a cure for their pain. Some times it seems like it is the one thing that can in fact alleviate pain and stress when other medication can't do the job.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method used to resolve many complex medical issues. It was used in conjunction with Chinese herbs and medicines. It still is used this way today. It is a healing process that many claim have improved their life when other traditional medicines could not.

Acupuncture is essentially the use of many sharp needles. These needles are inserted just under the skin in precise location. It is assumed that by placing the needles in these certain places that pain or stress will be alleviated in others.

Many people are hesitant to accept the use of acupuncture. It takes a great deal of skill and research to master the art. There are classes that use models for practice to ensure that the technique is learned completely. If the needles are not placed in the exact position, more pain could be inflicted on the patient.

If a person seeks treatment from an uncertified acupuncture profession then detrimental effects could occur. The body's nervous system could potentially be affected negatively. For example, if a patient comes in complaining of pain in a body part and an unlicensed acupuncture treatment occurs, it is possible that the needles were placed in the wrong areas making the patients pain worsen.

It is important to get treatment from a well trained professional because they will alleviate your pain by using the correct acupuncture techniques. The Chinese developed this treatment specifically for treating pain and stress. So far, it seems like the technique has worked.

Recent medical breakthroughs have enabled it to be used for more than just certain ailments. The list of ailments that you can use it for is constantly growing as patients seek alternatives to traditional medicines and healing practices. Today, acupuncture is mostly used for ailments such as: arthritis, back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and also sciatica.

Now you should have an idea of what acupuncture really is. It is a technique developed by the Chinese to treat both minor and major aches and pains. In fact, if you are desperate, this treatment may work for you when medications aren't helping.

Types of Meditation

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

Meditation is an important part of your martial arts training.

By Bill Bodri

Very few people haven't heard of meditation and its benefits. Time and again all over the world, research has shown that it has the ability to benefit all the aspects of a person as nothing else can.

For a beginner the prospect of meditation becomes a bit daunting because of the religious connotations that are associated with this art. However, if you wish to boost your mental and physical processes alike- meditation is the thing for you.

Here is a list of methods of meditation that you can use as a novice to get started.

1. Zen Buddhist Meditation Technique or Zazen- This one is associated with religious practices quite often. Yet, this is indeed one of the best techniques that have been propounded by Lord Buddha. Zazen forms the core of all Zen Buddhist rituals- and it involves focusing on breathing and is requires you to sit upright and remain silent.

Instructions- To begin this method, sit upright, and count to 10, exhaling after each count. As you finish the breathing counts to ten, begin anew. If your attention is distracted from your breaths, begin anew. Eventually your experience will bring you to the point where you don't have to count anymore and just focusing on your breaths will suffice. This can take many years of work to be able to master this. You can rely on the Zen technique to lift you both body and soul, and to bring you to a higher level of sensibility and cognition.

2. Mantra Meditation Method- This popularly held form is the heart of the Hindu faith and is very effective. Its name explains its use. First choose a mantra, a sacred utterance, that can be repeated in your mind or with your lips. This sacred utterance assists you in focusing your chi or energy and allows you to be more able to help your concentrative abilities to grow.

A favored mantra is So Hum Mantra Meditation. When inhaling, mentally say 'Sooo', then mentally say "Hummm" while you are exhaling. 'So Hum' interprets as 'I am That' meaning that you are unified with the divine. In this manner you are able to expand the emotions at your heart allowing you to open up your love, unreserved.

3. The Chakra Meditation Method- You could reap many benefits from this method of Chakra meditation. And the interesting part is that there are many variations of this method. Chakras are a whirlpool of energy that you must balance in order to reap benefit from this process. Once the energy in your system is properly balanced you could make considerable progress in both your emotional and physical fields. Here's how you could unlock and stabilize the flow of energy in your life-

a. Place your energies over your body and center your thoughts on them. Little by little your awareness will be filled with it and the energy inside will be released.

b. All Energies are concerned relatively to the Seed Sound or Beej Mantra. When saying the seed sound repeatedly a focus area of energy is opened and balanced. Be careful not to do it too quickly, you want to take your time.

If you want to find out how your life can be benefited from meditation just give it a try and find out!

Essential Oils you Must Have in Your Medicine Cabinet

Honest Mind, Loving Heart, Strength in Body! The Martial Arts way of Life at The Taekwondo Network

By Christa McCourt

Presently, we are overwhelmed with choices to rid our aches and pains, colds and flu, upset stomachs, diarrhea, allergies and so on. Between TV commercials and drug stores we have way too many choices!

How do you know which products are best? And why the heck do we need so many?

We can surely waste a lot of time in the drug store searching for the perfect remedy. Reading label after label and hoping we don't suffer any funky side effects.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to use natural medicine for almost all of your health concerns without the fear of side effects? Well you can. The solution is therapeutic grade essential oils.

For thousands of years, essential oils have been used as medicine. And now, the rediscovery of true aromatherapy is helping thousand of people in miraculous ways.

I feel so fortunate to have access to the healing power of essential oils. I'd be a mess without them!

Please remember not to stop any prescription medications that you are taking. You need these for your health. Always check with your primary doctor before you stop or lower your dose.

For fevers: Rub 3 drops of Peppermint essential oil on each foot. This has worked for me and many people I know, and it's especially good for children. For children under 2, dilute 1 part essential oil with 10 parts organic vegetable oil. Peppermint essential oil is also great for upset stomachs, headaches, stuffy noses, indigestion, improving concentration and healing insect bites. One bottle of peppermint essential oil could easily replace at least 6 different medications in your medicine cabinet.

For allergy sufferers: Take 1 drop of lavender essential oil and rub it on your cheeks and under your nose. Lavender essential oil acts as an antihistamine and will help clear allergic symptoms such as stuffy noses, sneezing and watery eyes. Along with lavender essential oil being a natural antihistamine, it also has relaxing properties when it's inhaled. And, Lavender has high anti-microbial properties that can cleanse cuts and wounds along with healing sunburn and other burns. A single bottle of lavender essential oil can replace many other medications.

For Joint Pain: Rub a few drops of an essential oil blend called PanAway on sore joints, as needed. This blend has helped me with back pain more times than I can count! PanAway essential oil blend contains; wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and peppermint (Mentha piperita.) This blend is also helpful to relieve muscle soreness associated with exercising. By using PanAway, you're able to replace over-the-counter muscle rubs and even common pain reliever pills.

Using therapeutic grade essential oils instead of common medications can give you great results, without any risk of side effects. Just remember to only use therapeutic grade essential oils for all of your health and healing needs. (c) 2008 Christa McCourt
