Martial Arts Power Revealed!

By Al Case

Everybody wants to have power! They want to be strong, able to jump in the UFC ring and toss around an attacker like a rag doll. The problem is that nobody really knows what true power is.

Everybody confuses the idea of power with the size of their muscles, or strength, or other things. But power has nothing to do with strength or muscles. The actual truth is that Power has to do with stabilizing the motor that is your body.

A motor is tension between two poles. Whether it is a pull or a push, the tension between two terminals results in a motor. Push on another body and you have a motor, love somebody and you have a motor, work with or against somebody and you have a motor, and so on from the smallest to the largest objects in this universe.

In the world of physics as we know it, a motor, unless held in place, will move as result of the forces it is creating and using. A car motor has brackets which hold the machine in place, lest it flip over and fall on the ground. A helicopter has a tail rotor to hold it in place.

In the martial arts one must hold oneself in place to weather an attack, or to launch an attack. That is the purposes of stances, incidentally, not to make strong legs, but to hold the body in place, or to launch it. Once one learns how to use stances in this manner one is able to use energy much more efficiently.

Now boxing, or the UFC type of fisticuffs, does not use stances, and they waste energy, and do not build energy. Thus, they must rely on the strength of individual motors such as biceps and triceps and hams and gluts and so on, which provide tension across the bones and enable them to move. At this point, unless there is an accident of colliding with the whole body, the only power provided is the weight of the arm, but when you hold the whole body in place, or launch it as a unit, you use the weight of the whole body, and this is efficiency.

The point here is that to enable the body to create true power, you must use a stance, and you must sink your weight whenever you do a technique. Whether you strike, or kick, or block, you must learn how to sink the weight when doing so. This will lock the motor of the body down, and actually cause the energy generator of the body the tan tien to create usable energy in wholesale amounts.

I know everybody wants to knock people over and win money, but MMA fighting doesn't create energy, it only wastes bodies. Thus, a practice of Karate, or Shaolin, or especially the wudan arts, results in far greater amounts of power, and with no risk of damage to the body. No offense to the big muscle boys, but we are talking about the source of power here, the kind of power that endures long and does lead the student of classical arts, such as karate or shaolin or wudan, to higher levels.

Yoga Stretches Relieve Back Pain Naturally

By Eva Norlyk Smith, Ph.D.

The health of our back impacts our well-being in numerous ways. Anyone suffering from back pain has experienced just how debilitating back pain can be. As recurring discomfort turns everyday tasks into painful chores, a person's mood, energy, and well-being often gets affected as well.

Yoga exercises for low back pain, upper back, shoulder or neck pain have recently drawn researchers' attention as a natural treatment for back pain. Back pain often arises from chronic tension and imbalances in the soft tissues, and as a consequence, surgery and prescription drugs are relatively ineffective at resolving back problems. Yoga offers promise as an alternative treatment for back pain, precisely because it's so effective at relieving tension and stiffness in the soft tissues, thereby targeting many back pain problems at their root.

In 2005, a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine reported that study participants who regularly practiced yoga stretches for back pain experienced more effective pain relief than did study participants who received instructions in proper back care. Recently, the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society have recommended yoga therapy as a promising alternative modality for treating chronic back pain.

Yoga can help relieve low back pain, shoulder, or neck pain in four major ways:

1. Yoga tones and strengthens weak muscles. Yoga is particularly effective for toning and strengthening the body's core muscles, which are critical for creating proper support for the spine and giving the back greater strength and stability. By increasing core stability and improving posture, yoga exercises for back pain decrease the pressure on the spine, a key element in creating lasting back-pain relief.

2. Yoga enhances flexibility. Back problems often arise when chronically tight muscles and soft tissue pull on the spine at unnatural angles. Yoga stretches increase the suppleness and flexibility of the soft tissues, and this in turn releases the strain caused by chronically tight muscles pulling the spine out of its natural alignment. By stretching out and releasing tension naturally, yoga relieves the pressure on the spine, in turn reducing back pain.

3. Yoga increases circulation. Yoga also improves back pain by enhancing oxygenation to body tissues, thereby increasing the flow of nutrients and removal of toxins in the spine itself. Many yoga poses for back pain alternate compression and release of pressure, coupled with an emphasis on deep breathing to systematically flood the body with uniquely oxygen-rich blood. This fresh influx of blood clears out toxins in the body and delivers vital nutrients to all areas, including the soft tissues. This is particularly helpful to people who sit at computers all day, which can lead to a compressed spine and restricted blood flow. Yoga stretches for the back lengthen and decompress the spine, thereby improving circulation to the vertebrae and vertebral discs.

4. Yoga reduces stress. Finally, yoga may help combat back pain by inducing greater relaxation. With all the stresses of everyday life, our nervous system often becomes constantly engaged in "fight or flight" mode. In this mode, our muscles-and especially those around the spine-tighten up. This constriction frequently leads to neck tension, tension headaches, and recurring back pain. Yoga therapy helps settle the mind and create greater relaxation in the body, shifting us from "fight or flight" into the rejuvenating "rest and digest" state. In this relaxed state, the body no longer fights to maintain readiness for battle, but begins to heal itself.

The beauty of any holistic approach to health, such as yoga, is that it offers therapeutic side benefits, not side effects. Yoga frees the flow of vital energy in the body, increasing the overall health of the body. For this reason, even if you start practicing yoga to get relief from back pain , you may also find that you experience benefits in terms of improved organ health, better mood, greater emotional balance and overall greater happiness and well-being.

Kung Fu Master...and the Secret of Light Kung Fu!

By Al Case

One of the neatest things in cinema was when David Carradine in the old Kung Fu TV series walked on the rice paper. Rice paper is extremely thin, and the moisture on the sole of the foot, along with the weight of the body, was enough to tear the stuff. The legend, of course, was there is this thing called Light Kung Fu, where one could actually make the body lighter, maybe even levitate it.

Now, myself and all the budding kung fu students in the neighborhood would watch David Carradine, Kwai Chang Caine as he was known on the tube, and wish we had a kung fu master to teach us how to do the light kung fu walk on rice paper. Why, there was no end to the power we would have if we only knew this thing called Light Kung Fu! The neighborhood bullies would shiver in their knickers if we had that awesome power!

So, a little thought about what Kawi Chang Caine was doing, a little western ingenuity, and we came up with a solution. Unroll a roll of toilet paper on a linoleum floor. Now, with a dropper, put a small drop of water in the middle of each square. Now, walk the walk.

Rice paper is like wet toilet paper, you see. So we walked, and...the thin stuff was ripped apart. Hmmm.

We cleaned the mess off the floor, let it dry, and unrolled the paper again, put our feet down and tried not to turn them at all. Squoosh, squoosh, yikes! Darn stuff just turned into puddly, little messes.

So we placed a long row of chairs next to the strip of tissue paper, and tried supporting ourselves as we walked the walk. Rip, squish, darn! This was tougher than we thought.

Now, in the end, we never did manage to walk the light kung fu walk, and not tear the filmy tissue into shreds. And, to be truthful, I don't think it is possible to do, toilet paper is supposed to dissolve in water, and rice paper, well, who knows what the heck rice paper is for, or even looks like. But something amazing happened because of our interest in being able to do what the old masters did, even if they were only actors on the tube.

In trying to walk on rice paper we ended up working out long and hard. While waiting for the floor to dry we ran through our kicking and blocking routines, we did our forms and worked on our balance and strength. In the end, though we never did manage to walk the light kung fu walk and not tear the living dickens out of that stupid toilet paper, we became masters by another means, we mastered kung fu through dedication and long hard work and by being inspired by our dreams!

Addressing Stress Using Natural Strategies

By Dee J Cohen

It's common to listen to folks discuss being wired, needing a mental health day off from work and being overwhelmed by life's challenges. Recently in the news it was reported that somebody stabbed his leg in order to not go to work the next day. Unfortunately, we are not taught stress reduction tips in school and our anxiety typically simply builds up without a healthy release.

Though folks use music as texting as a way to relax, these ways also can result in increased anxiety. Generally hearing a song related to a past relationship will create a deep sadness and sense of being lost. Texting can also end up becoming quite nerve-racking as angry exchanges and disappointments will occur as things are not going according to our hopes or plans.

Catching our negative thoughts are helpful before they sprout and become unmanageable. As an example, if you begin telling yourself that you may never get a job, nobody will ever love you or that you are a disappointment to your family take a deep breath. Do not keep feeding these thoughts, however instead see that this can be a pattern that you simply fall into that may not healthy.

Slow, deep breathing with a short pause when you inhale with after you exhale is helpful for quieting the mind. Try to try and do this in a quiet spot a few times a day. It can be done while you drive, sit on a subway or perhaps throughout a break at work.

Exercise is a smart way to get out of the thought patterns that control us. Realize something you prefer and can persist with in order to be consistent. As an example, if you hate jogging or the gym, consider long walks outside or swimming.

Evaluate whether your friends are all good for you or if they will contribute to the problem. Do they fall into bad habits that you also engage in? Do you choose folks that are critical or that continually want to be bailed out?

Look at the aspects of your friendships that may want to be discussed and changed. If certain relationships seem very destructive than question whether or not it's good to have them in your life or if you're better off with somebody that nourishes your energy and spirit.

We will change our moods and stop recent patterns by increasing our awareness and gaining perspective. Keep in mind that a lot of things won't be gripping in a week and that we tend to do not want to magnify them.

Patterns of Behavior Can Be Changed.

By Ellen Valentine, CNC

Although the possibility of all potential is a gift we've been given, we often twist the possibilities against ourselves. According to our energetic impulses, our thought waves, we also tap into the Pure Potential of the Universal Mind from which all things spring. And that happens because of the Laws of Attraction and Connectivity of all things.

When we experience emotion, part of our body mind, the hypothalamus matches the emotional state and sends out peptides through the pituitary gland which seek to connect or link to docking points on cells in our body. Similar thinking day after day which has the same feelings or emotions attached to it will find more than enough locking docks on cells to support that thinking. And whether those emotional responses net you good results or less than desirable results makes no difference. Frankly, if you don't like the results you're getting in life from your emotional responses, it's up to you to break the patterns.

Familiar triggers and emotions create patterns and habits because people tend to relate certain actions, people, places and experiences with strong feelings. This in turn sets up predictable behaviors because some things feel good and some feel bad. People generally go for the better or familiar feeling even if this doesn't net them the best results.

In brief it feels easier to do the same things, even if they do not bring the best results, because our neurological network gets wired for certain responses. And, although every human is limitless, many function at a very limited level because it feels normal or right to them. Daily behavior, then, becomes what a person believes to be typical for them; and, it will continue to be true for them. Patterns of thinking also set up an agreement with the Greater Universal Mind that this is what we expect to be true for us.

Because the Universe, Source, is very neutral and non-judgmental, it can only respond in support. It sends to us people, circumstances and materials that will be a similar energetic frequency to the energetic frequency of the thoughts or beliefs we hold to be true for us. The stronger the feelings behind thoughts, the bigger the frequency produced, and the faster the response from the Universal Field of All Potential.

Depending on the habitual pattern, the thing that keeps happening, our job to break the habit is to replace one thing for another which will produce a more desirable outcome. In other words, if we can understand a behavior that produces a painful outcome, then we can use a reprogramming technique such as Sedona Method, TFT and EFT, Breath work with Journaling or EMDR to shift the energy around patterns of behavior. It requires effort and continual vigilance for a full 30 - 40 days. That helps the neural network to send a new message for new behaviors. That's how long it takes to break a neurological response pattern, a habit. Your intention is everything.

As you break an old way of being, old networks are broken, new chemical responses are felt and new neural pathways are created. The Greater Universal Mind also supports the effort and determination on the part of the person. Because a person is shifting what they believe to be true about them, the impulse and response from the Universe supports the new belief. This goes back again to the Law of Connectivity and the Law of Attraction. This is the reason not to give up when you are working on YOU as a project. Many people, most people in fact, quit right before they achieve success.

Use the early morning and bedtime to focus on what you do want. If old Ways of Being pop in to mind, restructure them to be what you choose. Feel the feelings of success intensely and embrace that for yourself. Become a different, a new and a creative Observer in your own life. Remember that the Observer shifts the entire situation so decide what you want and get it.

Decide What You Want, Ellen Valentine, CNC

The Most Popular Forms Of Energy Meditation

By Trevor Johnson

Energy meditation is rapidly growing in popularity as a means of spiritual growth and self-improvement. Every day, more people find the practice can bring immense improvement to their life. It can provide increased health, greater focused, and abundant vitality. While there are many methods and traditional schools, a few stand out in their prominence and the availability of instruction.

Taoist meditation using internal alchemy is a form of energy work that is growing popularity. During meditation, different forms of energy are mixed in spiritual cauldrons to form various elixirs. This includes the five Taoist elements, as well as the classic yin and yang forces. All seven forms of energy come in three varieties. Jing is the basic motive energy in the body, most commonly drawn from sexual energy. Chi is the most common form of energy and is considered universal. Shen is a highly refined power, considered to be the very substance of the spirit.

Kaballah is a form of spiritual practice Jewish in origin, but practiced for centuries in Western world by a variety of people from differing religions. It visualizes both the universe and the soul as consisting of ten "spheres". This are connected by a number of paths and realized through internal transformations.

Prana yoga is extremely popular among people doing energy work. It is a well developed system for learning to control, cultivate, and transform the essence of life within the student. Initially, breathing exercises and poses provide an introduction to energy meditation. Over time, the student learns to perform the different technique through the will and focus of their mind alone.

Many people overwhelmed by the modern world have turned to the ancient path of shamans to guide their energy practices. By working with various spirits and totems, they learn to transmute the energy within them into a clear and powerful force. Rituals, glyphs, and images are used to further align the adherent's spirit and will in order to cultivate a vibrant life force.

Do not worry too much about which path is the most authentic or most potent. Individuals will have varying results based on their personality and interests. Select a method of energy development that fits you best.

10 Important Concepts When Practicing Tai Chi

By Walter McKibben

Practicing Tai Chi is not merely a swing of the arm and the movement of the feet. There is a reason behind every movement and style that is made. These concepts paved the way to building every form of Tai Chi. So you have to pay close attention to the things that are not brought often because even if things seem too basic, they are indeed important.

Here are 10 of the most important concepts of Tai Chi that you should never take for granted. Remember these, and it will make you appreciate more the forms that are performed.

Concept #1

Tai Chi is done with great emphasis on every movement that follows a continuous and connected pattern. This is evident i how the movement always starts from the spine, goes down to the waist, then moves lower to the legs and the feet. At the same time there is an upward motion; going up to the body then the arms, hands and last, the fingers.

Concept #2

Maintain your shoulders dropped. The term overflowing tension is used to describe the state where the shoulders are constantly tensed.

Concept #3

Keeping your wrist straight allows you to be prepared and have ample capacity for moving energy. This simple concept goes a good way to enabling an individual to cultivate the flow of energy in the body.

Concept #4

Slow motion is one of the best ways to achieve mastery. It can never be overlooked because if the slow rate of your motions is performed with continuous smoothness, this will improve the connection of your body to your environment.

Concept #5

Never let anything disconnect you. You should always stay connected with every movement. If you have been disconnected, continue to perform the movements and listen to your body so that you can overcome any distraction.

Concept #6

In practicing Tai Chi, your knees must always be bent. Also you need to maintain your balance for your height not to bob up and down.

Concept #7

The power of Tai Chi travels differently from the movement of Tai Chi. Power of Tai Chi will start from the feet going up to the legs, controlling the shoulders, and will be expressed by the fingers and hands.

Concept #8

Imagine your head is being help up by an imaginary string very high in the sky.

Concept #9

Without overdoing it, avoid puffing out the chest. It should remain relaxed and slightly concave.

Concept #10

Your breath must be focused on your dan-tien but force must not be exerted. As time in the program may pass, there will be accomplishments that will fulfill you like synchronizing your breathing with the movements that you make.

Remember to always consult your teacher when to exhale or inhale.

Which Martial Art is Going toWin, Karate or Aikido?

By Al Case

I know, the question is a bit bogus, as one should be comparing arts such as Karate and Aikido merely so as to make them compliment each other. Thus, with that statement made, let us discuss how the fist should wiggle into the glove. No pow and bam, just an honest, up front viewpoint for your edification and enlightenment.

Karate is supposed to be straight line, and Aikido is supposed to be the circle. Yet, if on looks at Karate, let alone the martial arts, one will see that perfection of geometric figure is loose, at best. If Karate could actually adhere to the perfect line, if one examines how the bones, joints, muscles and so on function, the body would probably explode, or, at least collapse upon itself.

And, on the other hand, if Aikido tried to adhere to the perfect circle, except in the most theoretical of classes, the art would not work. And, to be honest, aikido is not your best art for down and dirty combat. While Aikido is pure and wonderful, and can evolve the practitioner to high levels, one should use a martial art like Karate to enter the fight, then apply aikido.

The way to look at it is like this, distance collapses in a fight. The circle being made by stepping and circling the arm, and the lever of the extend arm is too long and unwieldy. However, Karate creates a perfect method to work your way to the inside of the fight, where you will find a shorter lever.

Instead of stepping in and tying a three foot arm circle to a wrist twist, try a hard middle block, slide in and turn the waist. As you turn the waist, bring the arms up to a short position and catch the elbow, shove your shoulder in and go with the flow. Go ahead, try this technical adaptation with a friend, even gaze at a little youtube to get the idea of the arts involved, and you are going to find an instant blend of karate, even the hardest of karate, like Kyukoshinkai, with even the purest of Aikido, even the soft taught by Morihei Uyeshiba.

Now, the above being detailed, the big weakness of Karate is that it is limited, in most modern formats, to destruction. It has been tailored for tournament, gloves put on for more violence, and given over to fighting for fighting sake. But while there is an art to destruction, the true art is in control.

Thus, a study of Aikido, with the advices I give you here, will enable you to confront the fiercest violence, and transmogrify that violence into the most magical and wondrous of techniques. You kick, you punch, maybe soften the fellow up, then you simply embrace the arms and learn how to go with the flow.

A last word on this subject, don't mistake the throws of Aikido for those throws espoused by such arts as judo or jujitsu. While techniques of the jujitsu methods are quick and workable, we want to move from hard to soft in a conceptual sense, and a certain amount of hard is still needed to make most ju techniques work. That all said, I wish you the best with this new art you are creating, whether you call it...karido...aikate...your choice.

Who would win the fight, Bruce or Mohammad Ali?

By Al Case

Man, there's gonna be a knock down drag out up in heaven! I can feel it in the soul of my bones! The question is, will Mohammad knock down Bruce, or will The Little Dragon knock down Mohammad?

Okay, size it up by considering the physical measurements of the combatants. Mohammad Ali was a tall six foot three inches, and Bruce Lee was only a short five foot seven inches. The point goes to Mohammad on this one, but just barely when one considers Bruce's legs.

Now, weight is always a critical factor, so let us take a look. Bruce Lees weight went up and down, but at his ripping best he was probably about 160 pounds, Mohammad had his ups and downs in weight, also, but we can round it out to about 200 pounds. Mohammad gets the nod in this area, for 200 pounds of flesh is going to have a sizable boffaloonie behind it.

Speed is always quite important in a fight, and here the edge goes to Bruce. Yes, Mohammad had an instant of invisible punch to his credit in one fight. Watch Bruce Lee, however, and you will see that his speed is a constant blur.

All around martial ability considered, and Bruce gets the edge. Yes, Mohammad was fluid, powerful, and unique, but he was limited to arms. Honestly, though we can only award one point per category, I would like to give more to Bruce, for you would have to tie one of Bruce's legs behind his back to get an even fight.

One should never under estimate the importance of the mouth in a fight. Simply, if you talk the talk with sufficient prowess, you might not have to walk the walk. That said, in spite of Bruce having access to script writers, no one in the world could compete with the Louiseville Lip, why, you would have to tie one of Mohammad's lips behind his back to get an even contest!

Now, Mohammad has the edge thus far, but the contest is about to go even-steven, for we are going to consider the most important question in the martial arts, what a person knows. Mohammad knew a lot, but his was a natural talent, and limited by being able to use only his sizable mitts, knowing no significant take-downs, and so on. Bruce, on the other hand, not only knew an amazing amount of hits, kicks, trips, throws, and so on, he knew Mohammad Ali, he used to watch movies of Mohammad just to study his technique.

In conclusion, I am not going to give either fighter a knock out, because these men were just too fast to be laid out. I am, however, going to give a decision to The Little Dragon, this because he not only watched movies of Mohammad Ali, he watched them in a mirror so he could understand the big Mohammad on either side! Now that is unbelievably creative and innovative, and I believe it is the deciding factor in awarding the decision to Bruce!

Get Motivated -- It Pays

By Courtney Hampton

Pain may sometimes be the reason why people change. Getting failed grades make us realize that we need to study. Debts prompt us of our inability to look for a source of income. Being guilty gives us the 'push' to speak up and struggle for ourselves to save our face from the next embarrassments. It may be a bad experience, a friend's tragic story, a great movie, or an instigating book that will help us get up and get just the right amount of motivation we need in order to amend ourselves.

With the infinite negativities the world brings about, how do we keep motivated? Try on the tips I prepared from A to Z...

A - Accomplish your dreams. Obviate negative people, things & places. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

B - Believe in your self, and in what you can do.

C - Believe in things on every angle & prospect. Motivation comes from determination. To be competent to understand life, you should feel the sun from both sides.

D - Do not give up & do not give in. Thomas Edison failed once, twice, more than thrice before he came up with his innovation & formed the incandescent light bulb. Make motivation as your steering wheel.

E - Enjoy. Work as if you don't need money. Dance as if nobody's viewing. Love as if you never cried. Learn as if you will live forever. Motivation takes place when people are glad.

F - Family & Friends - are life's greatest 'F' treasures. Don't loose vision of them.

G - Give more than what is adequate. Where does motivation & self betterment take place at work? At home? At school? When you maintain extra effort in doing things.

H - Hang on to your dreams. They may dangle in there for a moment, but these little stars will be your driving force.

I - Ignore those who try to ruin you. Don't let other people to get the best of you. Stay out of virulent people - the kind of friends who hates to hear about your success.

J - Just be yourself. The key to success is to be yourself. & the key to be an unsuccessful person is to try to please everyone.

K - Keep trying no matter how hard life may appear. When a person is motivated, finally he sees a harsh life ultimately clearing out, paving the direction to self improvement.

L - Learn to love your self. Now is not that easy?
